Beach Reads

So……..O Magazine (not Orgasm but Oprah) recently listed their Summer 2019 Beach Reads.  This includes such fun and frothy titles as TWO MARRIAGES by Phillip Lopate (the brilliant Phillip Lopate pairs two novellas about struggling with the most unknowable of characters: one’s spouse.), THE PIANO TEACHER by Janice Y. K. Lee (”I hope I don’t destroy you,” whispers the seductive Trudy Liang…), BEGINNERS GREEK by James Collins (The arch and romantic read of any season, James Collins’s Beginner’s Greek (Little, Brown) makes you half-believe in miracles.), THE STORY OF A MARRIAGE by Andrew Sean Greer (a beautiful, lyrical novel of the 1950s in a country at war with itself), GOLDENGROVE by Francine Prose ( Her ungainly heroine is 13-year-old Nico, whose daring, beautiful sister Margaret drowns, leaving the family in ruins.)….Um wow I think that’s enough.

This list also includes Candace Bushnell’s  ONE FIFTH AVENUE and Richard Price’s LUSH LIFE so it’s not all fiction with a more literary slant.  And yes, we all know that Oprah never picks genre fiction but I have to say that, for the most part, this list leaves me snoozing or aching for anti-depressants!  I mean no disrespect to the authors, but when I think of beach reads, I think fun, engrossing, fast paced and since I love suspense/thrillers, maybe even scary….not a family in ruins *sigh*

So, do you do beach reads? Do you pick up new stuff or take comfort in old favorites? What are you reading right now? DISH!
